A workation offers the perfect combination of work and vacation, where you can do your work in an inspiring environment away from the daily grind. A great destination for a workation is Costa Rica. One of the most beautiful places I have ever been. This beautiful country in Central America is known for its breathtaking nature, friendly people and relaxed lifestyle. In this blog I will take you on a virtual workation to Costa Rica and share tips and experiences that can help you plan your own workation.
Why go on a workation to Costa Rica?
The world has so many beautiful places to offer that sometimes it is hard to choose where to go. My choice of Costa Rica was definitely a hit and was everything I expected it to be. Especially as a sun lover, it was the perfect place to go in the Dutch winter. As far as I am concerned, the nature, the relaxed culture and the fine facilities for remote working are the main reason for choosing this country.
1. Breathtaking nature
Costa Rica is a beautiful country and for me nature was the main reason for going here. With rainforests, impressive volcanoes, beautiful beaches and rich biodiversity, it is a paradise for nature lovers. Imagine starting your workday with a hike through the jungle or a sunrise surf lesson before sitting down at your laptop. Nature has been proven to have a good effect on people. I personally always experience good relaxation when I am in nature. You let go of work more easily and can handle stress better. The peace and serenity of nature can give your productivity and creativity an enormous boost.
2. Relaxed lifestyle
The locals of Costa Rica, also known as Ticos, are known for their “Pura Vida” mentality. You can hear and see this everywhere. This literally means “pure life” and represents a positive, relaxed and stress-free lifestyle. This mentality is contagious and can help you find a better work-life balance. Moreover, the atmosphere in Costa Rica is very welcoming and you will soon feel at home.
3. Good facilities for remote working
Costa Rica has invested heavily in its digital infrastructure in recent years. In many cities and towns, you can now find co-working spaces, cafes with high-speed Wi-Fi and other amenities that make working remotely easy. Popular destinations such as Tamarindo, Santa Teresa and San Jose offer many opportunities for digital nomads. In smaller towns and villages, you do run the risk with poor Internet connection and less coverage. If you have a specific place in mind that is more remote, check carefully in advance to see if the facilities are good enough for remote work. Do you prefer a destination a little closer to home? Maybe Portugal is something for you. There are good facilities and many nice coastal towns with a chill vibe. Read our tips on remote working in the Algarve here.
My tour of Costa Rica
I flew from Amsterdam to San Jose, the most common route. From there I went to Quepos, near Manuel Antonio National Park. Here you will find a tropical forest and white sandy beaches. Then I went on to Monteverde, into the tropical rainforest. THE place to go ziplining! Then on to La Fortuna and then to Sarapiquí Rainforest and Tortuguero. Finally, I went to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, a small chill spot on the beach. Little work came of it here, but was the perfect place to end my trip in vacation mode.
Workation destinations in Costa Rica
When I travel I always like to see a lot of a country. I prefer not to stay in one place, but go to different places. This often involves a lot of travel time to get from A to B, because the distances are longer and the transport often takes longer (and is a little less reliable). Keep that in mind in your (work) planning.
- Coastal Tamarindo
Tamarindo is a bustling coastal town on the Pacific coast, known for its beautiful beaches and excellent surfing opportunities. It is a great place for those who want to enjoy sun, sea and beach while working remotely. There are plenty of co-working spaces and cafes where you can work overlooking the ocean. - Paradise Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a little paradise on the west coast of the Nicoya Peninsula. I didn’t go here myself, but regretted that in retrospect. Everyone is very enthusiastic about this place. This charming village attracts surfers, yogis and digital nomads from all over the world. The relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches make it an ideal place for a workation. Moreover, there are many boutique hotels and villas offering long-term stays. - Capital city San José
San José, the capital of Costa Rica, is a big busy city. Although it is less known for its beaches or beautiful nature, it has a vibrant culture, good restaurants and a growing number of co-working spaces. It is a good base for those who want to explore the rest of the country on weekends.
On workstation to Costa Rica
A workstation in Costa Rica offers the perfect combination of work and relaxation in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Whether you choose the vibrant beaches of Tamarindo, the quiet charm of Santa Teresa or the urban energy of San José, you will undoubtedly return inspired. So grab your laptop, book your flight and experience for yourself why Costa Rica is the ideal destination for a workation! Pura Vida!
