More and more people are discovering the freedom of working remotely. And what better way to take advantage of this freedom than a workstation in Asia? This diverse and vibrant region is perfect for digital nomads. Whether you’re looking for serene beaches, bustling cities or cultural adventures, Asia has it all. Here are my tips for a great workation in Asia.
My experience in Asia
In 2018, I spent almost a year traveling solo through Asia. My somewhat out of control sabbatical was actually only supposed to last 2 months. I had completely unexpectedly lost my job and then decided to seek adventure on the other side of the world. I liked it so much that I ended up staying for 8 months. After 8 months I came to a point where it felt good to go back home, it had been nice. Back to reality. And with that reality came a job. I saw a job opening on LinkedIn as an event manager at Frankwatching, applied and was allowed to come in for an interview, digitally. In 2018, I thought that was really hip for a company to hire me when we had only had 2 video interviews.
That this employer was flexible was obvious. This was evident when, after only 5 weeks of employment, I left on workstation to Croatia for 2 weeks with my 2 team members. This was followed by many remote work adventures in salaried employment before I started Working Remotely. Do you also want a job where you can work remotely? Then read how to score such a job here.
The highlights of Southeast Asia
Because I had no time constraints, I made the most of my trip and took my time for each country. I traveled low budget so I could stay as long as possible. Also, I’m not into luxury, just good is good enough. And if you haven’t taken the rickety night bus or sat among the locals in a scheduled bus, you haven’t experienced the real Asia have you? I started in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Many flights go there and they are sometimes still quite affordable. Then I went on to Chiang Mai and Pai in northern Thailand. Near there, I crossed the border into Laos, which I then went all the way through from north to south. From there I flew to Hanoi, in northern Vietnam. Vietnam I also went all the way through from north to south. At the bottom I crossed the border into Cambodia and then flew to Koh Samui in Thailand for island hopping south of Thailand. Then I went on to Malaysia and ended in Singapore. Then I had to go home for a while due to commitments and then went back to Asia to explore Indonesia. I started in Bali, went through Nusa Penida to Lombok. Then I went for adventure in Java and ended my tour in Sumatra. I can tell you that this was the best year of my life. I saw so much, learned so much and most of all enjoyed it!

Tips for a successful workation
Working from a different place offers enormous advantages, such as a better climate, beautiful green surroundings and a different culture. You choose an inspiring work environment and literally expand your horizons. This will bring you great things both privately and professionally. There are a few things to take into account: 1. Working with time difference
If you are going to work remotely from Asia, the first thing you have to take into account is the time difference with the Netherlands. This does not have to be an obstacle, but be aware that you are in a different time zone, with 5 to 7 hours time difference, depending on where you are. If you have meetings or need to call the Netherlands, you will have to adjust your working hours. Not all employers are keen on this, so discuss this well in advance with your manager, or with your client if you are a freelancer. 2. Reliable internet
A fast and stable internet connection is essential for every digital nomad. Do research in advance about the Wi-Fi speeds in your chosen destination. Check with the accommodation you book and avoid unpleasant surprises. Consider a local SIM card with a data plan as a backup. 3. Opt for a coworking space
You can also opt for a coworking space. These are pretty much all over the place. Simply searching in advance via google or travel blogs will help you get started. Check the reviews and contact them in advance to check availability. Then you can be sure you have a nice workspace, with good wifi and most likely air conditioning.
Also, don’t underestimate that the temperature can rise considerably and you’ll want a cool work environment.
Co-working spaces are not only convenient because of their facilities, but also for networking. You can meet like-minded professionals, exchange ideas, and possibly form new collaborations. I myself have met new people here on every trip, some of whom I am still in touch with or even collaborate with.
4. Discover other culture
One of the greatest benefits of working abroad is the chance to experience new cultures. Take the time to learn the local language and customs. Asia has very different norms and values. With remote work, you can enrich your knowledge and get to know this culture. Also, do your homework beforehand so that you respect the locals. Also try to add value in your new place, bring something, not just get something. Reduce your ecological footprint that way. 5. Good work/life balance
It can be tempting to think of your workation as a vacation, but it is important to find a balance between work and relaxation. Set daily or weekly goals for your work and plan your free time to relax and explore. Make no mistake about the number of temptations you will encounter. A new environment, new people, a new workplace, this will take you time and energy to settle in. In addition, you will be working a good number of hours of the day; it is not a vacation. Also factor in plenty of travel time, both to your possible workspace and traveling to another city or even country. Before you know it, there are too few hours in a day and it comes at the expense of your relaxing workation.
Going to Asia as a digital nomad
A workation in Asia can be an enriching, productive and fantastic experience. That was certainly the case for me. With the right planning and mindset, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: exploring new places while getting your work done. Whether you choose the beaches of Bali, the temples of Chiang Mai or the city life of Ho Chi Minh City, Asia offers something for everyone. So grab your laptop and embark on your next adventure as a digital nomad in Asia!
