For true travel enthusiasts, the ideal is to travel as much as possible for as little money as possible. If money were no object, many of us would prefer to go on workstation even more often. Remote work offers the ultimate freedom, but it can also be quite pricey. Fortunately, there are smart ways to enjoy remote (work) life for free. Here are some handy tips for inexpensive workation.

Explore home exchange and pet sitting opportunities

Have you ever thought about staying somewhere else for free? Seriously, it can be done! Think house swapping, where you simply temporarily swap homes with someone else. And that can be anywhere in the world! Do you have a dream destination at the top of your list? Then check out platforms like Swaphouse, totally free and perfect for digital nomads. It’s a smart move to save quite a bit of money on your accommodation costs. If that’s not quite your thing, you can also go for house-sitters. Sometimes you may have to take care of the pets, but hey, that’s a small price to pay for the freedom to explore your new surroundings without spending a dime. And it can include other chores, like giving the plants a sip of water. One platform for this, for example, is TrustedHousesitters.

Doing free activities and sightseeing

Free is always nice, right? Abroad is teeming with free attractions. Venture into nature, enjoy the beach or relax in a beautiful park. There are also many museums that you can visit for free. There are also certain days when some attractions are free to visit. Ask your accommodation host, for example, they know the ins and outs of your destination and will tell you exactly where to go.

Earning passive income with a side hustle

A side hustle is a side income in addition to your regular job, often focused on a passion or interest. It is a popular way to generate (extra) income. It takes some effort in the beginning to build your online side hustle, but when it starts going well, the rewards are worth it. How nice it is when you are lying on the beach while passive income comes in the meantime. Sidehustles abound: blogging, affiliate marketing, crypto, a web shop and investing. Choose whatever suits you best.

Discover the world as an au-pair

Are you good with children? Then becoming an au pair can be a great way to not only live somewhere else temporarily, but also earn money. That way, you will already earn back your trip. Although you usually stay in one place, there are exceptions with adventurous families who will show you around the world. During the time I lived in Paris, I became friends with girls who were au-pairs. They loved the work and recommended it to me. They shared their experience in which this unique opportunity allowed them to travel a lot. Besides picking up the kids from school and babysitting, they had plenty of time to explore the area.

Choose a job at your destination

Working at the place where you are staying and enjoying free accommodation and meals in return can be ideal. Whether you choose a farm, a campground, or somewhere else, where you roll up your sleeves on the land, in the garden, or perhaps in service. You may not earn much (or sometimes nothing at all), but you also have no expenses. And the best part? Opportunities like this can be found all over the world.

Go to work in the travel industry

If you dream of a career where you get paid to explore the world, consider working in the travel industry. From travel blogger to travel consultant, the possibilities are endless. Choosing to work in the travel industry allows you to combine your passion for travel with your job. You see more and more Travel bloggers passing by on Instagram. We are an example of that ourselves. We also travel for work and create content for that, often on behalf of an external party or collaboration. Wondering how you can become a travel blogger? Then read the blog of Wander-Lust, one of the largest Dutch travel blogs, about how they went about becoming a great travel blog.
