As fans of remote working, we are always looking for new places for a workation. Places where we can work well and discover new surroundings at the same time. That’s why I decided, together with Alieke, to plan a workation in Friesland at the beautiful Lauwersmeer. Four days of combining work and relaxation in a beautiful typically Dutch environment: we loved it!
On to Oostmahorn
Upon arriving in Friesland, Alieke and I decided to explore the area right away. We took a walk in the picturesque village of Esonstad and went for a stroll along the Lauwersmeer, where we got talking to a friendly local. We perched next to him on a bench, where he was enjoying the sunshine with his little dog. He enthusiastically told us about the village, the Lauwersmeer and his personal memories of the village. For us citygirls it was a wonderful moment when we realized we were just outside the city: time for rest and life at a slower pace.
A lovely cottage and perfect base
Our base of operations was a cozy cottage we found through Arrangie Friesland. An obviously new cottage with a cozy interior, cozy sitting area, nice beds and, for remote workers just as important: a large table with good chairs to work at. The location was also super nice: as soon as we finished our work, we could take a walk in the beautiful surroundings. Really recommended if you want to get some new energy. When you are in such beautiful surroundings, it is important to plan your work week in such a way that you actually have time to enjoy your new place. It would be a shame if you make very long days and have little time to do fun things and discover your surroundings. Here are tips from Alieke on how to organize your work week during a workation.
Sailing the Lauwersmeer with captain Aaldrik
On one of the afternoons, we decided to let go of work for a while and go out on the water. We took a cruise with Captain Aaldrik, who turned out to be not only the helmsman of the boat, but also a great storyteller. As we sailed the Lauwersmeer, he told us about the history of his 120-year-old boat (which, by the way, can also be used as a unique meeting location for companies), the lake and the surrounding villages. For example, we learned how the Lauwersmeer was actually created by closing off the sea and how this area is now a natural paradise for birds and nature lovers. And did you know that you can even spot the Northern Lights from this spot? Unfortunately we were not lucky in this regard, but it is increasingly common to see it here: so traveling further north to Europe for this phenomenon is no longer necessary!
Why a work station at Lauwersmeer?
We secretly already knew this, but our work trip to Friesland proved it once again: you don’t have to travel far to have a wonderful workation! The Netherlands is also super suitable to work remotely for a while and get to know a new environment. We enjoyed our time at Lauwersmeer and we are sure you will too!
