A workation in Valencia is the perfect balance between work and discovery. After your work day, enjoy the city’s beautiful sights, vibrant culture and delicious Spanish food. In this blog you will read the top 5 to-do’s in Valencia that will make your workation unforgettable. I can know, having done several long workations in this amazing city. From historical sights to culinary delights, these activities will inspire and energize you because, of course, you don’t come to Spain just to work.
1. Explore the historic center
Begin your workation adventure in Valencia’s historic center, El Carmen. Stroll through the streets of the Old Town and admire the beautiful architecture, such as the impressive cathedral and the iconic La Lonja de la Seda silk fair. Dive into the local culture as you explore the lively markets and traditional stores. Valencia ‘s historic center has a rich mix of history and charm that should not be missed. My favorite market is Mercat de Colon, where you can enjoy drinks and delicious food.
2. Visit Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias
An absolute must-see during your workation in Valencia is Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. The impressive architectural complex features several striking buildings, including the opera house Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, the Príncipe Felipe science museum and the park L’Oceanogràfic. You can work from coworking spaces nearby and explore unique sights after your workday.
Did you know that it cost a whopping 1.3 billion to make this building? Bizarre right!
3. Taste the local cuisine
Valencia is known for its delicious dishes, especially the world-famous paella. This dish originates from Valencia so you should definitely go eat it here! Make your workation a culinary adventure by exploring the local cuisine, you are in Spain for a reason. Enjoy a traditional paella in one of the many restaurants in the city or at the beach, for example at El Trompo. Enjoy tapas in cozy bars and discover local specialties such as horchata (a distinct and refreshing drink) and buñuelos (sweet fritters).
4. Valencia’s nicest beaches
Valencia has beautiful beaches that are perfect for relaxing after a productive work day. Head to the popular La Malvarrosa beach and take a dip in the Mediterranean. Starting in May, the weather here is often lovely and you can already enter the sea, although the water will still be cold. Work with your laptop from a beach bar such as La Mas Bonita or Boa Beach. If you like to be active, you can enjoy running along the coastline and playing beach volleyball. The latter is very popular here. You will find rows of nets on many beaches and many clubs that play beach volleyball, but you can also play by yourself with friends. I have little talent for it myself unfortunately, but found it super fun to do when I lived in Valencia.
5. Cycle through the Turia Park
Valencia has a unique feature that sets the city apart – the Turia Park. This former riverbed, transformed into a green oasis, is perfect for exploring during your workation. People can always be found in the park. There are lots of athletes, picnics, people reading a book and all the fun is that there are regular salsa classes in the square next to the fountain. I can watch this for hours and enjoy the Spanish music and dance. Rent a bike, do a bike tour with local guide and enjoy a fun bike ride along the beautiful paths that wind through the park. Enjoy the greenery and clear your head after your work day.
A workation in Valencia is a great way to combine work and discovery. With a mix of historic sights, modern architecture, delicious food, beautiful beaches and green parks, Valencia offers everything you need for an inspiring and productive experience. And it’s only a 2-hour flight away. Explore the historic center, visit Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, sample local cuisine, relax on the beach and bike through Turia Park.
