Workations for businesses: collaborating in an inspiring location
More and more organizations are discovering the benefits of a workation: temporarily working from a location abroad, together with colleagues. Not only does this strengthen mutual cooperation, it also increases productivity, creativity and job satisfaction. At Working Remotely, we support companies in organizing inspiring company trips, fully tailored to your team, goals and way of working.
Whether it’s a team week in Portugal, a strategic session in Spain or a remote working environment in Morocco, we provide fine accommodation, good wifi and the right balance between working and relaxing.
What does a workation cost?
We would be happy to create a customized proposal for your corporate trip that completely meets your needs. To give an idea of the cost: a week in Valencia with 15 people can be booked from €750 p.p. That includes accommodation, partially catering, activities and local transportation. If you go outside the EU, the price is from € 1100 p.p. We can also arrange flights, trains and rental cars. Want just a tip for a good venue and arrange everything else yourself? That’s also possible!
Is a workation tax deductible?
A common question among employers: is a workation business deductible? The answer is: yes, under conditions. A workation is basically tax deductible if the business nature is clearly demonstrable. This means that the costs must be proportional to the business purpose of the trip. Think about work-related meetings or strategic sessions, or working days with productive output (working remotely on location).
If the program is primarily focused on work and there is a clear business angle, expenses such as accommodation, workplaces, meeting rooms and any transportation are deductible as business expenses. Private expenses, such as trips or meals outside the business program, obviously are not.
What about the work expense ratio (WKR) at a workation?
When organizing a workation, it is important to also take into account the working expenses scheme (WKR). This regulation allows employers to give certain compensations, benefits in kind and provisions to employees tax-free – as long as they fall within the so-called free space. Depending on how it is implemented, a workation can (partially) fall under the WKR.
We recommend recording goals, schedule and activities prior to the workation and documenting them afterwards as well. This way you can easily demonstrate that the expenses are business-related. For exact tax rules and deductibility, we recommend consulting your accountant or tax professional.
