By now I have been to 27 destinations on workation. Each place has its charm. I am regularly asked what my favorite location is. That question is impossible to answer. The world has so many beautiful places. One destination is impressive because of a fantastic bounty beach, another because of amazing nature or views or because my accommodation was great. Still, I did my best to list my top 8 workation locations.
Remote working in beautiful Malaga
In the south of Spain in Andalusia you will find the city of Malaga. A hip and lively city by the beach. Despite being a big city, I find it a nice destination because almost everything is within walking distance. If you go there for a week, you can see a lot of the city. While meandering through the Spanish streets, you will come across many nice restaurants, all small and charming. I’ve stayed at several places, my favorite being The Lights City Rooms, right next to the beautiful covered market.
Sustainable travel to vibrant Berlin
Berlin is a city everyone has been to at least once. So it was high time I went there too. The city is bursting with creativity and has a very urban vibe. Everywhere you see art, music and entertainment. The perfect place for your stay here is Selina Berlin Mitte. A hotel in the middle of the city, where there are many remote workers. You can start your day with yoga (for free), have a nice workspace and lovely roof terrace. You can also book all kinds of cool activities, like the Alternative Berlin Walking Tour, which I really recommend.
You can get to Berlin by train in about 6 hours. There is a direct connection from the Netherlands. There are also night trains that take you to the heart of Berlin, so you won’t lose time traveling during the day. This is a fine and sustainable way to travel for your workation.
Enjoy breathtaking Athens
The capital of Greece is a perfect place for a workation. Athens has a rich history, is very modern and there is a lot to do in and around the city. For example, I took a day trip by boat from Athens along 3 nice islands, definitely recommended. In this blog you can read all the tips to go to Athens as a digital nomad. The best place to stay during your workation is Selina Athens Theatrou. There you will find many people working remotely, it has nice facilities and is right in the middle of the city. And what I personally found to be the highlight, literally, was the amazing rooftop terrace overlooking the iconic Arcopolis. One of the most beautiful workplaces I’ve been to last year.
On workstation in fabulous Valencia
Valencia is secretly my favorite Spanish city. I have been there many times and never get tired of it. A city with lots of character, beautiful buildings, a wonderful park to walk through and you also bike to the beach in no time. From gnarly Spanish restaurants to trendy hotspots, Valencia has it all. Want to stay low budget in the center? Then choose Cantagua Hostel in the trendy Ruzafa district. Want to enjoy your own apartment? Then Appartementos La Mas Bonita is my absolute favorite for your workout. Close to the beach and tastefully decorated. Don’t forget to go to their restaurants, it’s heavenly!
Remote working in Stockholm
For years Sweden had been high on my list, but the fact that it was so expensive held me back. Therefore, I thought a workation was better than vacation. Then you spend a little less money and at least it doesn’t cost you days off if you are employed. The city is insane! Yes, it hurts your wallet, but you get something in return. Fun eateries, hip bars, beautiful buildings, tasty Swedish balls. I really liked the Generator Hostel in the nice neighborhood of Norrmalm, which was affordable and had a nice lobby to work in during the day.
A tropical workation in Curaçao
Are you in the mood for good sunshine? Then Curaçao is the place to be. A lovely island in the Caribbean. You can enjoy a nice tropical temperature and chill vibe all year round. The ideal place to work in the morning and explore the island or go to the beach at the end of the afternoon. I went was with 2 girlfriends and went to a small villa at the Papagayo Beach Resort, which was a really great place. You can also go to the Papagayo Beach Hotel next door, where you walk right out of your room and right into the beautiful infinity pool. If you are looking for a small-scale and atmospheric stay, then Boutique Hotel ‘T Klooster in Pietermaai is what you are looking for. Very atmospheric, fantastic staff and within walking distance of all kinds of nice restaurants.
Enjoying nature in Switzerland
If you have never been to Switzerland you should definitely do so. What a beautiful country! Both in summer and winter the nature is beautiful. A perfect place to unwind after work. Take a nice hike, hit the ski slopes or seek adventure with a mountain bike tour. I stayed at several places, each of which had its charm. The Rocksresort Laax is nice if you like comfort. The Riders Hotel Laax is a cool place with several nice corners to enjoy working. The Hotel Medelina in Curaglia feels like coming home. The staff is fantastic and took us on a hike with their flock of sheep through the mountain peaks themselves.
One advantage of a destination like Switzerland is that it is quite doable to go there by train. Even in Switzerland itself, the train is the best option to travel from one place to another, because those rides are really phenomenal. I have never taken such beautiful train rides. Certainly the Glacier Express is really very impressive!
On workstation in the Netherlands
You don’t always have to go far away to get away. Our own country has plenty of nice things to offer too. I have been on workstation in the Netherlands many times. Recently I went to Friesland, which is a really great place to work remotely, where you are outside a lot. The Suvelfabryk in Lioessens just opened and is a really beautiful place. Super stylish and a nice place to enjoy working. If you have a little more to spend, Hotel de Abdij Dokkum is also highly recommended. If you want something more of a camping vibe in nature then Het Lage Noorden is really nice.
If you are a lover of the beach and want to get some fresh air after your workday, Basecamp Tiny House Eco Resort in IJmuiden is for you. The self-sufficient park with cute tiny houses is located right behind the dunes and is decorated in a very attractive way.
