Not too far from the Netherlands and yet in a different world: the Belgian Ardennes. An ideal destination for a workation and sustainable too. In just a few hours’ drive you are already there. It is mostly known for the many outdoor activities you can do. We went out for a few days to explore this destination for a workation. Especially for groups, it is an interesting destination.
Sustainable on workation
After a considerable search, I had found the perfect accommodation in the Ardennes where you can go with a large group for a workation. This brand new villa has just been renovated and is fully equipped. No air travel is required, which makes this a sustainable destination. Especially if you can carpool with each other from the Netherlands to the destination. In this case, I did just that on the way there. On the way back I went by train, which is also good to do.
Things to do in the Belgian Ardennes
As I said above, I think at the Ardennes equivalent to outdoor activities. I have been there many times and then I find that I am especially outdoors a lot. Whether it is summer or winter. The fresh outdoor air does a person good. But there is much more than that. After a working day it is the ideal place to relax and have fun. Here are my tips:
- Brewery
Did you know that Belgium has as many as 400 breweries, bizarre! So having a Belgian beer is kind of fun when you’re here. The most fun is to combine that with visiting a brewery. I went to Peak Beer , which lay beautifully and tasted good. 🙂 Another famous one is La Chouffe.
- Hiking and mountain biking
There are countless hiking and biking routes in the Ardennes, so there is always one nearby. You can decide how long you want to walk or bike and which route you choose. Along the way you often pass beautiful viewpoints.
- Climbing Forest
Are you in the mood for action and an adrenaline rush Then a climbing forest is fun to do, that can be in the neighborhood for example at Coo Adventures. Kies er een die bij jouw niveau past en ga de uitdaging aan. Zeker met een team of vrienden is dit erg leuk om te doen.
- Wildlife spotting
One of the most fun things to do in the middle of nature is to spot wildlife. You have no guarantees, but you do have a chance to encounter deer, wild boar, badgers or foxes. Especially early in the morning or in the evening after dusk.
The perfect accommodation in the Ardennes
If you are looking for accommodation for large groups, there is plenty of choice in the Ardennes, but chances are you will end up in a youth hostel, which is not what I am looking for. I value a little more comfort. This large villa can accommodate groups of up to 47 people, all with separate beds. You can do your own shopping and cooking, or choose the convenience of a caterer.
The villa is located in the middle of nature, with a beautiful view. On the spacious outdoor terrace here you can enjoy the view and regularly see birds of prey flying in front of you. Not a wrong place to work! You walk from the yard directly into the forest and in the surrounding meadows there are horses running around. I myself was lucky enough to see foxes playing in the backyard when opening the curtains of my bedroom in the morning. That was super special!
It has a large private outdoor area for all kinds of activities such as a volleyball court, a soccer field and barbecue. There is an indoor pool, sauna, mini cinema, large game room with bar (table soccer, billiards, ping pong table). Near the villa you can also go to a climbing forest, kayaking, paintballing, horseback riding and mountain biking. And, what I think is mega cool, you can do a drop in the forest with a helicopter!
With your colleagues to the Ardennes
If you want a fun outing with your team, but not too far away, the Ardennes is the ideal destination. Especially if you stay in this large villa, you don’t have to arrange much else. Because there is plenty to do in and around the house, you can also save costs on expensive activities at another location. In addition, you can also cook your own meals and light the barbecue.
