Have you always dreamed of a life where you can work whenever and wherever you want? Where you are not tied to a 9-to-5 office job, but are your own boss? For many, this is the ultimate dream: freedom, flexibility and pursuing your passion. But how do you start this journey? In this blog, I share how you can make your dream come true and become a successful remote entrepreneur.

Make your passion your work

The first step to remote entrepreneurship is discovering what you really love to do and what you are good at. This can range from writing, graphic design, marketing, coaching, to developing apps. Take time to reflect on your passions and skills. Helpful questions here are:

  • What makes your heart beat faster?
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • What do you get energy from?
  • What do you easily get out of bed for?

Develop the right online skills

By pairing your passions with your skills, you can build a solid foundation for your business. The two things go hand in hand. If you have a passion for something that makes your heart beat faster, then working on your business almost naturally. Then it comes from intrinsic motivation. Therefore, developing the right skills will come easier to you. Then you want it so badly that you are also willing to put in the effort. And not to give up too quickly and to show perseverance. It is almost impossible to already have all the skills you need for your business, but this is a great way to further develop your skills.

I recognize this very much in myself. I once failed Dutch and hated everything with texts, but now that I passionately write about remote work and travel, it suddenly comes naturally. I find it super fun to do and have done a lot of research on blogging, by now I can say I’ve become good at it too.

Make a clear plan

A dream without a plan often remains just a dream. Turn your ideas into a concrete plan. What exactly do you want to achieve? What services or products will you offer? Who is your target audience?

A goal is a dream with a deadline.

Making a business plan, even if it’s simple, helps you stay focused and make your goals clear. Make sure you also think about your revenue model and how to make your business profitable.

  • Discover your passion
  • Discover your talent and develop your skills
  • Create your ideal (remote) job

Build a network

For many entrepreneurs, channels like LinkedIn and Instagram are indispensable. As a remote entrepreneur, your online presence is crucial. Invest in a professional website and use social media to promote your services and expand your network. Content marketing, such as blogging, creating videos or recording podcasts, can help you showcase your expertise and build an audience. Your website is your business card and should appeal to potential customers and inspire trust. Networking is an important part of being an entrepreneur. Join online communities, participate in forums, attend webinars and find online events in your field. Connect with other entrepreneurs and potential clients. It is also tremendously nice to surround yourself with like-minded people, and spar with them about your business. This can help you gain valuable insights and feedback, discover collaboration opportunities, and grow your business. Don’t forget to network locally as well, such as through co-working spaces or entrepreneurial associations.

Make your entrepreneurial dream come true

Start before you’re ready is lesson number one here. Nothing has to be perfect and you will learn a lot on the way. You are often far too critical of your own work and see things that others will not notice. Take it one step at a time and don’t get overwhelmed by everything that comes your way. If you follow your passion and develop the right skills you will get there. So go for it! Curious about what professions are possible as a remote entrepreneur? Then read this blog

Don’t believe in fairy tales

Online, you see more and more cowboy stories about online entrepreneurship. If some Instagram entrepreneurs are to be believed, it’s a piece of cake to build a multimillion-dollar business. But that’s not how it works. Make sure you have a well thought out plan, as outlined in the steps above. Be realistic, though, and don’t expect to earn a fat salary in no time while you sit back in your beach chair. I’m not a fan of becoming a social media manager in a few weeks/months because that takes longer to learn those skills. You’re not going to make 10K a month in a few months, you’ll be lucky if you can do that after a few years. Getting sleepily rich without doing much for it only happens in fairy tales. But you can definitely create a nice remote work life for yourself.
