In a world where working from home is becoming more normal, the popularity of “workations” – a combination of work and vacation – is growing. It’s nice to get away from it all, without bringing your work to a halt. You don’t always have to go far away for the vacation feeling; you can have a great time at our southern neighbors in Belgium. Whether you are looking for peace and quiet or a bit more liveliness, Belgium has something for everyone. In this blog I give you tips for a successful workation and suggestions for fun places to visit.

Why a workation in Belgium?

When I think of Belgium I immediately think: Flemish fries, Brussels waffles, special beers and chocolate. So remarkably delicious food and drink haha. But apart from that, I find Belgium a nice workation destination anyway. I really like the language, it always sounds very cozy to me. In the north they speak Dutch, which also makes it very easy. Also the people are often nice, and a lot quieter than us Dutch. The big advantage, of course, is that you don’t have to travel far, to still be in a completely different environment. You can easily go there by car or public transportation. You have several nice cities to visit, but also a nice beach and of course the Belgian Ardennes, where you can enjoy nature.

Tips for a successful workation

  • Choose the right accommodation:Find a place with good wifi, a comfortable workspace and plenty of rest. This can range from a trendy coworking space in the city to a quiet vacation rental in the Ardennes.Make a schedule:
  • Make sure you strike a good balance between work and relaxation. Plan your work days and also keep room to explore the area. After all, you’re going to a different place for a reason.
  • Choose the right company: You can go by yourself, or you can go with a partner, a friend or a colleague. Just keep in mind that you will both be working remotely, if the other is on vacation then that is not a nice combination.

Great places to work remotely in Belgium

There are quite a few nice places to discover among our southern neighbors. Cities like Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent, or just nature in the Ardennes or a nice coastal town. To be honest, I am not a fan of Liege. And so there are a number of places in Belgium that I don’t particularly like. But there is certainly plenty of choice if you don’t want to go on a workation too far from home.

1. Vibrant Bruges

Bruges, also called the Venice of the North, is a perfect blend of historic charm and modern facilities. Choose one of the many B&Bs or hotels with good working facilities. Explore the beautiful canals, medieval buildings and atmospheric squares during your free time. Don’t forget to take a boat trip through the canals! I really enjoyed doing that, even though it is mega touristy.

2. Great Ghent

Ghent is a lively student city with a rich history and a vibrant cultural life. It is a great place for a workation if you are looking for an inspiring environment. Ghent has hip coffee bars and coworking spaces where you can work. After work, you can enjoy the nightlife or visit Gravensteen Castle.

3. Outdoor fun in The Ardennes

If you want to get out into nature, the Ardennes is a good choice. This region is ideal for those who enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking, mountain biking or kayaking. There are many nice cottages and vacation homes for rent, where you can work in peace. After your working day, you can explore the forests or visit quaint villages like Durbuy and La Roche-en-Ardenne, my favorites.

4. Attractive Antwerp

For those who love an urban environment, Antwerp is a top destination. And it’s nice and close. This city is known for fashion, art and the culinary scene. You can work in one of the many coworking spaces or cafes with good wifi, and in your free time explore the famous shopping streets and museums. Visit the Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) for an impressive view of the city.

5. The Belgian coast

For those who prefer to work close to the sea, the Belgian coast is a must. Places like Knokke, Ostend and De Haan offer the perfect mix for working and relaxing. Work overlooking the sea and take a walk on the beach during your break. The fresh sea air always does a person good and makes you feel more relaxed.

So plan your trip, grab your laptop and go on a remote work adventure with your southern neighbors. Oh yeah, and bring back a nice box of chocolates, at least I always do.
