Remote working has become the new norm for many, and what could be better than combining your work with beautiful nature and adventure hikes? I love working from inspiring workplaces around the world and find it ideal to combine that with getting out into nature. Europe offers a wealth of destinations where you can be productive AND enjoy the most beautiful hiking trails. Here are 5 special European spots for your workation, where you can effortlessly combine remote work with unforgettable hikes.

1. Tromsø, Norway

In the far north of Norway lies Tromsø, an ideal destination for those who love rugged, unspoiled nature and long days in the summer months. Tromsø offers good opportunities to work from cafes and coworking spaces, with stable Internet connections, despite its remote location. But what makes Tromsø truly special is its spectacular surroundings. From fjords to mountain landscapes and arctic wilderness, you’ll find hikes for every level. Hiking tip: The Tromsdalstinden hike is a challenging but beautiful route that takes you to the top of Tromsdalstinden Mountain. At 1,238 meters, you have a breathtaking view of Tromsø and the surrounding fjords. Perfect to end the day after a few hours of work.

2. Funchal, Madeira (Portugal)

Madeira, the volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is a hiker’s paradise. Funchal, the capital, has everything you need to work remotely: fast wifi, cozy cafes and coworking spaces. But once you close your laptop, you can head out into nature to enjoy the beautiful hiking trails along the famous levadas, ancient irrigation canals that wind through mountains and valleys. Hiking tip: The levada walks are a unique experience. Try the Levada das 25 Fontes, a popular route that takes you past dozens of waterfalls and immerses you in the lush greenery of the Laurisilva forest.

3. Zermatt, Switzerland

For the adventurous hiker, Zermatt in Switzerland is a dream location. Located at the foot of the famous Matterhorn, this car-free village offers breathtaking hiking trails in the Swiss Alps. Although it is a luxury destination, you can do great remote work from hotels or chalets with good Internet connection. The Alpine landscape provides the perfect backdrop for your workday, while you can enjoy nature in the off hours. Hiking tip: The Gornergrat hike offers one of the most spectacular views of the Matterhorn and surrounding glaciers. You can hike up and down by train, or do the entire route on foot for a considerable challenge. Curious about more tips on a workout in Switzerland? I went there last year and have listed all my tips for you.

4. Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany is known for its rolling hills, vineyards and quaint villages, but it is also a great place for hiking as well as remote work. From cities like Florence or Siena, you can easily find a workplace in a quiet agriturismo overlooking the countryside. The region has many hiking trails through vineyards and olive groves, and you can combine your walks with local wine tastings and delicious Italian food. Hiking tip: The Via Francigena is an ancient pilgrimage route that runs through Tuscany. A popular stage is from San Gimignano to Monteriggioni, where you hike through the typical Tuscan countryside past historic villages and castles.

5. Picos de Europa, Spain

The Picos de Europa is a lesser-known but breathtaking mountain range in northern Spain. Here you will find craggy mountain landscapes, deep gorges and green valleys, perfect for long hikes. In villages like Cangas de Onís, you can find accommodations with stable Internet connections, so you can work with mountain views. The peaceful surroundings and many outdoor activities make this a great place to combine work and adventure. Hiking tip: The Ruta del Cares is one of the most famous hiking trails in the Picos de Europa. This spectacular route runs along a deep gorge and offers beautiful views of the mountainous terrain. It is a relatively accessible hike, but the views are unforgettable.

Tips for combining hiking and remote work

  • Choose your workspace carefully: Make sure your accommodation has reliable Wi-Fi and a quiet workspace so you can work productively. Check this carefully in advance. Many European destinations have workspaces for digital nomads or accommodations set up for remote workers.
  • Plan your hikes outside of work hours: Choose morning or evening hikes, or use your lunch break for a short hike. This way you can enjoy nature to the fullest without disrupting your work rhythm. Want to go on a long hike? Plan this well and take extra days off for this, if necessary.
  • Take enough time: Opt for somewhat longer stays, to see more of the area without feeling rushed. This will also give you time to keep up your work and enjoy the outdoor experiences. Don’t fall into the trap of wanting to do too much in one day, since you also need to put in work hours.

Combine remote work with hiking

In Europe, there are many destinations where you can combine remote work with beautiful hikes. Whether you choose the wild nature of Norway, the sunny hiking trails of Madeira or the impressive mountain landscapes of Switzerland, there is always a place that perfectly suits your needs. Just be sure to balance work and free time and make a realistic schedule. Time for action! Grab your hiking boots AND your laptop, and go on an adventure!
