The land of beautiful nature, mountain views, cheese fondue and outdoor activities. That was the image I had of Switzerland. High time to find out if that is true and if it is a fine destination for a workation. Spoiler: YES! It was even more beautiful and fun than I expected beforehand.
On workstation in Switzerland
We went to Switzerland for a total of 9 days. Because you work, you have less time to travel and I recommend visiting a maximum of 3 places. Then you can take your time exploring in those places without being too rushed.
We started our workation in Lucerne and were immediately impressed. Wow! A beautiful city, with a beautiful lake and white mountain peaks as a backdrop. You can have a great time here with nice walks through the city center, going to a café or enjoying the view of the water.
Then we went into the Swiss Alps. Toward Disentis, in the middle of nowhere where time has stood still in the villages. The characteristic Swiss architecture exudes so much charm, with cute awnings and wooden beams. In the morning, you only hear the birds and keep looking at the beautiful mountain views.
Finally, we went to Laax and Flims, near Chur. A true skiing paradise in March. It is known for freestyling and is a spectacle to see the snowboarders and skiers doing stunts on the slopes. I need to practice a lot to be able to participate in that. It is way ahead of its time and the whole area has its own wifi, for example, whether you are in a workspace or on the slopes. I stayed at the wonderful Rocksresort, which really comes highly recommended.
Remote working from the Swiss Alps
One of the main reasons to go on a workstation is to discover a new place. Especially as a travel enthusiast, it is ideal that you do not have to take time off, but can just bring your laptop with you. If you are looking for peace and nature, Switzerland is the perfect destination. Many workplaces are surrounded by nature, with beautiful views.
Swiss culture
As far as I am concerned, Switzerland has a good combination of a very developed country and authenticity. In general, Swiss are very polite and calm. Perhaps they also radiate this calmness because nature exudes such calmness. It is a wealthy country. And quite pricey, compared to what we are used to in the Netherlands. You can eat delicious food, especially if you like cheese. We ate a delicious traditional cheese fondue in Laax, with toblerone mousse for dessert and with a good glass of Swiss wine. That cost about €65 p.p., which was well worth it.

Sustainability is very important
That the world is changing and having a significant impact on the climate is clearly visible here. The glaciers are melting. Mountains that were normally white in winter are now green. Bizarre to see with your own eyes. As a result, the local population is facing water shortages and challenges in winter sports tourism. Sustainability is therefore an important issue in Switzerland. There are an awful lot of projects focusing on people and nature.

Transportation during your work trip
Just traveling through Switzerland is a highlight. I really enjoy every train ride because it is so incredibly beautiful. It’s like a painting. We took the train from the Netherlands to Switzerland, which is very comfortable, sustainable and efficient. For us, that was just a working day, but on the train. We also did a work meeting with each other, which was fine. With hotels, you often get free public transportation included, so you can easily get around the city or area.
I am also writing this blog while on the train and there are as we speak handed out delicious Swiss chocolates. I’m over!
Bucket list experience
I have had the Glacier Express on my bucket list for years. What an experience to take this train ride here! Crossing through the Swiss Alps is like a movie. The scenery changes constantly, from the middle of the snow to right past blue lakes to green mountains full of pine trees. Definitely a must to travel through this country by train. In fact, even the local trains run along these popular routes. To be honest, sometimes it is hard to concentrate on my laptop when the landscape around me is so beautiful haha.
Activities in Switzerland
There are many outdoor activities available. For example, you can do wonderful hiking and fat biking in both winter and summer. It is also great fun to go to a cheese dairy. Locals are happy to tell you how they make their cheese, after which you can try it for yourself.
In winter, of course, winter sports activities in Switzerland are very popular. There are many beautiful ski areas, for different levels. If you want to do something different in the snow for once, sledding is also recommended. This is also fantastic as an adult, I speak from experience. After a hard day’s work we had a great time sledding down the slopes in the snow. If you want a little less adrenaline, a snowshoe hike is also really great to do.
In summer, nature is just as impressive. The green forests, fresh air and countless clear lakes are so beautiful. You can go for beautiful walks, cycling or swimming after your working day. We had a unique experience at Hotel Medelina with a hike with goats. Wait whut? In the winter, the goats are stabled and enjoy a walk, so we went out with a goatherd to take a walk with these amazing animals.
With your team on workation
You can go to Switzerland alone or with a friend or colleague. There are beautiful lodges and lovely apartments that are great for large groups. The quality of the accommodations is very good and there is a high level of service everywhere. It does come with a price tag, but you definitely get something in return. Working Remotely is happy to arrange a fun workation for your team here.
Would you also like to go on workstation in Switzerland with your team? This accommodation is the perfect place for that.
