I catch myself constantly using the word workation, because this is something I do on a daily basis, but many people actually don’t really know what it is. After all, what is the meaning of the word workation? Even the autocorrect of your laptop or phone regularly turns it into workstation by mistake, because the word is so new. In this blog, I’ll explain it to you.
Working anno now
In recent years, the world of work has undergone a drastic change. New forms of work and flexibility have taken hold, thanks in part to technological advances and especially the rise of working from home. One of the latest resulting trends is the “workation. But what exactly is a workation and why has it become so popular?
The definition of a workation
A workation is a combination of the English words work and vacation. The idea is simple: you take your work to a vacation destination and combine work obligations with relaxation and recreation. Instead of being completely disconnected from work, like a traditional vacation, during a workation you stay productive while enjoying a new environment. There are several ways to go on a workation. For example, you can take a solo trip, go with a friend/partner, go with a colleague, or even go on a workation with your entire company.
Why choose a workation?
The reason for going on workation can be very different. It depends on your personal needs. Some want to extend their vacation a little longer and start working from that place already. Another needs a new environment. For me personally, I consciously choose to go away in the winter, because I hate the cold and like to escape to the sun. Here are the most common reasons:
1. Change of environment
A change of scenery can do wonders for your creativity and productivity. Working from a new place, be it a tropical beach, a quiet mountain cabin or a vibrant city, can inspire and spark new ideas. As long as there’s good wifi you can be fine on workstation.
Not only does this provide positive energy during your work vacation, but you will also find that it provides a boost in the lead-up to it. Preparing, making fun plans, researching your destination, it all adds to the anticipation of your workation. You can also draw on this energy boost after your workation is over.
2. Better work-life balance
A workation offers the opportunity to combine work and leisure. You can work during the day and enjoy free time in the afternoon to explore the area, relax or undertake new activities. You can also enjoy the evenings. If you are not a morning person you can also choose to turn it around and, for example, go surfing first and then go to work. In any case, it is clear that relaxation accounts for 50% of the workation, making it a perfect work-life balance.
Tip: Always try to travel on weekends or in the evening. Or take a day off. Don’t underestimate how much time this takes and that you can’t work while moving from A to B.
3. Reduction of stress
Breaking the daily grind and working in a relaxed environment can reduce stress. It’s a little different from your home office or the office garden. Nature has been proven to have a positive impact on your mental well-being. Often, a workation also means that you naturally spend more time outdoors, out and about and therefore unwind faster.
4. Flexibility and freedom
Modern technology makes it possible to work from virtually any location these days. Especially for a workation, considering that’s just a temporary trip and you’re generally not gone for very long. As long as you have a reliable Internet connection, you can choose your workstation wherever you want. This provides a sense of freedom and flexibility that traditional office environments cannot offer.
How do you prepare for a working vacation?
1. Choose the right destination
Choose a destination that is both inspiring and practical for your work. Consider factors such as time zones, Internet connectivity and access to work facilities. 2. Make a schedule
Establish a clear schedule for your workation. Decide what hours you will work and what time you will reserve for relaxation and exploration. Ensure a good balance between the two. 3. Inform your employer and work relations
Communicate your plans with your employer and colleagues if you have them. Even if you are a freelancer, it is helpful to briefly inform your work associates. Make sure they are aware of your availability and that your work does not suffer because of your absence from the office. Get the right equipment
Bring all the necessary equipment and accessories, such as a laptop, chargers, and possibly a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Don’t forget to create a comfortable workspace even when you’re traveling. Afraid of forgetting something? Here’s a handy list of all the work stuff you need to bring.
