Thailand was never actually at the top of my bucket list, but boy oh boy what was I wrong! I loved it here. I was afraid of too much tourism and not enough authenticity, but that is definitely not the case. It has everything you need to work nice remote and enjoy the tropical life at the same time. Here are my tips for great destinations and nice workspaces in Thailand.
The best cities in Thailand for remote working
If you go to Thailand as a digital nomad, my advice is to look for some larger cities if you want to work there. In the smaller towns, villages and small islands there is not always a good wifi connection. A risk you cannot take if you go on workation. These are more destinations for a vacation. Or visit places like this on weekends, or at least when you have a few days off.
1. Chiang Mai
This city in northern Thailand is often considered the epicenter of Thailand’s digital nomad community. You’ll find tons of co-working spaces, affordable accommodations and a relaxed atmosphere. Chiang Mai is an ideal place to flip open your laptop and get to work. The lively markets, nearby mountains and temples provide plenty of distractions in your free time.
2. Bangkok
If you prefer an urban environment with everything a big city has to offer, Bangkok is your place. Then you must love hustle and bustle and heat. Thailand’s capital city has high-speed Internet access, plenty of co-working spaces and a vibrant nightlife. Despite the hectic pace, there are also plenty of quiet neighborhoods and green spaces to catch your breath.
3. Phuket
For those who prefer a tropical island, Phuket offers a great mix of work and relaxation. Besides the beautiful beaches, the island has a growing digital nomad community and plenty of workplaces where you can be both productive and enjoy the paradise views. It is a very popular destination though, so keep in mind there is a lot of tourism and crowds.
4. Koh Samui
This island combines the best of both worlds: the tranquil, natural environment and the amenities of a developed tourist destination. Koh Samui has a chill atmosphere and plenty of workplaces overlooking the sea. This is a great place to work and completely unwind at the same time. I also really liked neighboring Koh Phangan.
Coworking spaces and (work) cafes
Thailand is one of the best Asian countries to work remotely and today has a wide range of co-working spaces tailored to the needs of digital nomads. You can choose different types of subscriptions depending on how often you want to use them. In cities like Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Phuket, you’ll find workspaces that range from minimalist, quiet spaces to lively hubs where you can network easily.
Don’t underestimate how nice it is to be able to work in a cool air-conditioned room in a hot country like Thailand.
Popular coworking spaces
- Punspace (Chiang Mai): One of the best-known co-working spaces in Chiang Mai, with multiple locations scattered throughout the city. There is high-speed wifi, air conditioning and a community of creative minds.
- Piccolo (Bangkok): This cute cafe is a fine workplace in Bangkok, where you can enjoy delicious coffee while working.
- Glowfish (Bangkok): This cool workspace has different types of workstations and even separate areas where you can take a power nap.
- Coffee Lab (Phuket): This is the ideal workspace if you like good coffee and a little commotion around you.

Networking and events
Thailand has a vibrant community of digital nomads, with numerous events, meetups and conferences. If you are going to work remotely, you can easily find like-minded people that way. You can find places like this through Facebook groups, Instagram, through your coworking space or coliving if you are staying there. Simply Google your location and the terms remote working or digital nomad and you’ll get more than enough options.
Important things about Thailand
In addition to realistic work planning, there is much to prepare for your workation in Thailand. Think of the right visa, insurance, vaccinations and financial planning. Especially the latter is often forgotten, because you think everything in Asia is cheap. It is certainly affordable, but do not underestimate how quickly the costs will rise if you stay for a longer period of time and do lots of fun things. Read up on this and make the right preparations.
